Proposed traffic calming measures for Thomas Place, Rose Park

Background

Thomas Place is used by many cyclists each day to access the traffic lights at the Fullarton Road and Grant Avenue intersection. Annual bicycle counts show that this intersection is the busiest cycling location in the City of Burnside.

The volume of both vehicle and bicycle traffic using this narrow laneway can increase safety risks for all road users, particularly for cyclists.

Council’s Bicycle Network Plan aims to create a safer and more accessible cycling network throughout the city. One of the actions identified in the plan relates to Thomas Place, Rose Park, between Alexandra Avenue and Grant Avenue.

What is proposed?

There are 5 proposed options to improve safety in Thomas Place:

1. ‘Watch for cyclists’ signs attached to Stobie Poles at the Alexandra Avenue and Grant Avenue entrances to Thomas Place.

2. Add a garden bed near the Alexandra Avenue end of Thomas Place.

3. Install a road mural on the Thomas Place road surface and potentially on adjoining fences. If this option is chosen, Council will consult with you on what the final design will be.

4. A combination of all 3 (bike signs, garden bed and road mural).

5. Other. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.

Why these options?

The options have been developed by Council's landscape architects and traffic engineers taking into consideration:

  • Improving safety for all road users.
  • Maintaining access for residents and businesses.
  • Accommodating waste collection vehicles.
  • Managing sightlines and visibility at key locations.
  • Complying with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport's Code of Technical Requirements.

Proposed options

The four concept designs are summarised below. Further artist impressions for each option can be found on the right of this page.

Option 1 - Addition of signs at the Alexandra Avenue and Grant Avenue entrances to Thomas Place to alert motorists to the presence of cyclists.

Option 2 - Additon of a garden bed near the Alexandra Avenue end of Thomas Place to assist in calming traffic.

Option 3 - Addition of a mural on the road surface, and potentially adjoining fences, to enhance the streetscape and assist in calming traffic.

*This is an example mural, if residents support the option of a mural they will have a say on the final choice.

Option 4 - Combination of options 1 to 3 (bike signs, garden bed, road mural)

Option 5 - Other. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.
