Proposed road closure trial of Main Street, Eastwood

UPDATE 21 July 2026

At the Council Meeting on 21 July 2026, Council resolved to not proceed with the proposed trail road closure. Future community engagement with residents will take place to investigate alternative traffic management measures to improve road safety and amenity in Main Street, Eastwood, and adjacent streets.

Council has developed a suburb specific Precinct Plan for Dulwich, Rose Park, Toorak Gardens, Frewville, Glenunga and Eastwood that highlight the actions Council intends to take to improve local transport safety, accessibility and liveability.

Community feedback received during the development of the precinct plan indicated that Main Street hasan above average peak hour volume with a high level of cut-though traffic. Residents sought a reduction in traffic volume in front of Main Street Reserve and Grove Kindergarten, where vulnerable pedestrians are present.

A recommendation of the precinct plan is a six-month trial of a road closure at Main Street. During the trial, Council wouldmonitor the site and gather relevant traffic data and further community feedback to determine the impact of the trial.

Ifsupported by the community and endorsed by Council, a six-month trial closure would have taken place. For the trial closure, a swing barrier gate would have been installed adjacent to the Main Street intersection with Matilda Dixon Lane and Birkin Street. The gate would havebeen locked butaccessible for waste collection trucks.
