Update
At the Council Meeting on 21 July 2026, Council resolved to approve that the unnamed Lane 2 be formally named Caledonian Lane.
Lane 1, located off Matilda Street, will remain unnamed.
The full Council Resolution is as follows:
C72026/14191
That Council:
- Notes the outcomes of the community engagement undertaken between 25 February 2026 and 10 April 2026 regarding the proposed naming of 2 unnamed lanes in Eastwood.
- Notes that Shand Lane received the highest level of community support for Lane 1 (46.1%) and Caledonian Lane received the highest level of community support for Lane 2 (42.9%).
- Notes that alternative historically based naming suggestions were also received through the engagement process.
- Notes that the engagement process undertaken satisfies the requirements of Council's Naming of Public Places Policy, Community Engagement and Consultation Policy and relevant legislative requirements.
- Resolves that the unnamed lanes in Eastwood, as identified in the plan at Attachment 1 to Report 2026-528, be formally named:
- Lane 2: Caledonian Lane
When Eastwood was subdivided in the late 1880s, two unnamed lanes were created that were later declared public roads in the 1980s. These lanes, as shown in the image below now require formal naming.

After consultation with the Burnside Historical Society, a theme reflecting prominent Eastwood residents wasselected and three potential names identified:
- Caledonian Lane
- Shand Lane
- Duncan Lane
These names reference the Caledonian Brewery that once operated in Eastwood and notable Eastwood resident Walter Duncan

Council sought feedback on the names for the two lanes via a survey which concluded on 10 April 2026.
