Craddock Street, Linden Park was originally named in the early 1920s to honour Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, a British naval officer killed in World War I.
Recent advice from the Burnside Military History Research Group, supported by Council’s Historical Cultural Officer, confirms that the street name has been misspelled since at least 1928. The historically accurate spelling of the Admiral’s surname is Cradock (with one “d”).
Although the incorrect spelling has been in longstanding use, correcting the name aligns with Council’s Naming of Public Places Policy, which requires historical accuracy and verification. The proposed alteration ensures the street properly reflects its original commemorative intent and is consistent with the names of nearby streets that recognising World War I Admirals.
What was proposed?
It was proposed to change the street name to be Cradock Street to ensure the historically accurate spelling of the street with its namesake Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock.
